Academic Goals

Department of North Korean Studies aims to educate students who have academic interest of national unification with a combined approach of politics, economy, military, social and culture in the 21st century where the division of the Korean peninsular remains as an unresolved tragedy.

Degree Requirements

1. M.A. Program

1) M.A. program requires students to take a total of 24 credits. Also, students must take 18 or more credits from the core and major courses in order to graduate.

2) A student may take up to 6 credits of related field courses from consortium schools under permission by the academic advisor and the dean of department.

3) The student whose undergraduate school major was not related to North Korean Studies should take more courses designated by his(her) academic advisor.

2. Ph.D. Program

1) Ph. D. program requires students to take a total of 36 credits. Also, students must take 24 or more credits from the core and major courses in order to graduate.

2) The student whose undergraduate and graduate school major were not related to North Korean Studies should take more courses designated by his(her) academic advisor.

3) A student may take up to 9 credits of equivalent field courses from consortium schools by permission from the academic advisor and the dean of department.

Comprehensive Examinations

1. M.A. Program

1) Regardless of the major field, students are required to take 2 from core courses and 2 from their own major courses (a total of 4 examinations).

2) A student who had passed some comprehensive examinations of required can take an exemption of examination on passed courses in the 2nd examinations.

2. Ph.D. Program

1) Regardless of the major field, students are required to take 2 from core courses and 3 from their own major courses (a total of 5 examinations).

2) A student who had passed some comprehensive examinations of required can take an exemption of examination on passed courses in the 2nd examinations.
