Academic Goals

KU-Program in Science and Technology Studies (KU-STS) aims to investigate the societal impact of science and technology in light of the constructivist perspective that considers the interactive relations between science, technology and social system.

Fields of Study

This program is composed of four sub-fields including (1) History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, (2) Sociology of Science and Technology, (3) Policy and Management of Science and Technology, (4) Communication and journalism on Science and Technology. During the past ten years, KU-STS Program admitted more than 100 master and Ph.D. candidates and those who completed or within the degree programs are now actively pursuing their career in such fields as education, research, media and industry.

Degree Requirements

1. We encourage students to get involved in interdisciplinary works integrating a wide scope of subjects in a variety of fields. To fulfill the initiative, we implement "two- supervisors system" : one is based on human or social science, the other is based on natural science or engineering.

1) In the first semester, the department head supervises students.

2) From the second semester, two supervisors substitute for department head.

2. Required credits for master's course are 24 : 9 credits (3 subjects) for core course and 15 credits for other program course or some relevant subjects which supervisor designates.

3. Required credits for doctoral course are 36 credits (exclusive of credits in master's course) : 4 subjects for core course (inclusive of credits in master's course) and 18 credits for other program course or some other relevant subjects which supervisor designates.

4. We prefer students to develop their career in different areas and the applicants are recommended to study different subjects during their undergraduate course. Therefore, some subjects for advisor designated courses are required by supervisors in order to adjust themselves in the course.

5. Advisor designated courses are to be replaced by some other similar ones under the agreement of department head and supervisor. The head of department has the authorization to confirm the credit earned and its score.

Advisor designated Courses

1. Among the subjects listed in Korea University Graduate School Bulletin (Korean edition), students must select up to 5 subjects designated by head of department or supervisors.

2. Students must select at least 2 subjects in their sub-fields.

Comprehensive Examinations

1. The Comprehensive Examinations for master's course covers common subject and major subject, and the Comprehensive Examinations for doctoral course covers major subject and elective other program subject. Applicants for the Comprehensive Examinations must select subjects for the examinations and hand out the form to the administrative staff. Application for the first semester must be completed before the end of October of the previous year, and application for the second semester must be completed before the end of April.

2. Common subject for the master's degree Comprehensive Examinations is composed of the core courses that the students complete. Major credit hours are completed with the relevant program courses which are selected in regard to their own specific major. The head of department and supervisor approve all the procedures.

1) The examinations for common subject is set with 2 core courses. Each subject has 50% worth (totalling 100 points for 100%). Two professors get involved in setting questions for the examinations.

2) The examinations for major subject covers 2 courses : the one is selected among their own major courses and the other is selected among other program courses. Each subject 50% worth (totalling 100 points). The selection of subject is completed under the consultant of two supervisors.

3. The examinations of major subject for doctoral degree are set with 2 subjects from their own major course and each has 50 points. The examinations for elective program subject covers 2 subjects from other program courses (exclusive of subjects from their own specific major). Each subject has 50 points worth. Selected subjects must be approved by supervisor and department head.

4. Foreign language requirements for doctoral degree : Students must pass the required level of 2 foreign languages. English is compulsory. The other language can be selected individually under the consultant with the head of department and supervisor.

5. One semester before completing their degree dissertation, the students of both master's course and doctoral course must hand out their proposal which is followed by preliminary inspection. Submission of degree dissertation for the first semester must be completed before 30th, November of previous year. For the second semester, the due date is the end of May.

6. To complete their degree, master's course students must present articles (inclusive of degree dissertation) more than once in the conference either hosted by department or approved by advisory committee. For achieving doctoral degree, students must publish more than an article in the national or international level of magazine.

The modeling approaches in the natural science will be introduced in order with respect to atom, electron, nucleus, particle, etc. Then we will investigate the outline about a viscous property, the Joul-Thomson effect, Pelitier effect, the theory of semiconductor energy band, the superconductors, and superscience. After this, the course will be extended to the studies about society, culture and organization, and finally reach various models like the cosmological model, the globe model, the human model and the body model.
