Korea University (KU) announced the launch of 1,000 South Korean Won (KRW) breakfasts. The meals are to be available at the student cafeterias in both the Student Union Building and Aegineung Student Union Building from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M during the weekdays of the 2022 fall semester. Both undergraduate and graduate KU students may show their student ID cards and receive meals at a price of 1,000 KRW.
The meals, normally ranging from 4,500 to 5,500 KRW, are provided at such an economical price due to funding by the KU Pride Club (KUPC). KU Pride Club is an association of KU alumni consisting of nearly 6,000 graduates, each donating 10,000 KRW or more each month. Apart from the 1,000 KRW breakfast program, titled “KUPC Hearty Morning,” the club provides financial assistance for living expenses and exchange student programs for disadvantaged students.
Students are expressing relief at the expansion of options for a cheap, nutritious meal, particularly amidst the current trend of increasing consumer prices. “You get a really good bang for your buck, and it’s delicious as well,” said Lee Sang Jun (‘21, Chemical and Biological Engineering). “Now that I’ve experienced the love and support of my sunbaes, I want to give back what I received to my hoobaes in the future.”
