(Edited on Sep 5th) Application for Exemption from Foreign Language Examination for Thesis/Dissertat

In accordance with Article 38 of Chapter 4 of the Detailed Enforcement Regulations of the Constitution of the Graduate School (General), applications for exemption from foreign language examination for thesis/dissertation submission shall proceed as follows. Apply for an exemption within the application period.
 
[Application for Exemption from Foreign Language Examination]

1. Eligibility: Students of a master’s, doctoral, or integrated master-doctoral degree program

2. Application Period: September 12, 2022 (Mon) 10:00–September 23, 2022 (Fri) 16:00
           * Since September 12 (Mon) is a public holiday, the Graduate School Administration Office is not in operation,
                 so you can submit documents related to exemption from September 13 (Tue).

          *Adhere to the application period as applications beyond the application period will not be processed.

3. Application Procedure
A. Official foreign language proficiency exam results: Go to KUPID(Korean.ver)  학적/졸업 각종시험 신청/확인 외국어시험 면제신청 →신청화면 and upload a scanned copy of the official foreign language proficiency exam results obtained within two years prior to the application date.

B. Students either acquiring a grade of at least a B in the foreign language courses replacing a foreign language examination or passing the on-campus graduation qualification English exam offered by KU: No separate application for the exemption required.
  (Students can check whether they have passed the English exam via KUPID Registration/Graduation → Application/Verification for Exams → Current Status of Exams)

4. Date of Confirmation for Exemption from the Foreign Language Examination for Fall Semester 2022: October 14, 2022 (Fri) (TBC)

5. Note
A. Check the standards for exemption from the German exam as the requirements for exemption from the German exam have changed commencing with students entering the University in March 2018.
B. Official foreign language proficiency exam results must be obtained within two years prior to the application date (for exam results that expire during the application period, students must upload them before their expiration and notify the staff in charge of foreign language exams by phone).
C. For IELTS, TestDaf and ZMP scores, students must submit the original results form to the Administration office of the Graduate School after completing the online application (exemption procedure will not be completed if the original results form is not submitted).
D. Applicants completing a regular Korean language course must enclose a transcript (KU Foreign Language Center: http://langtopia.korea.ac.kr).

F. Standards for exemption from the Japanese exam was established commencing with the fall semester of 2021.
G. To apply for exemption from the English exam, students must pass on-campus graduation qualification English exams (TOEIC IP or TOFEL ITP) held no later than October 2021.
 
[Foreign Language Courses Replacing Foreign Language Examination]

A. Students acquiring a grade of B or above (for General Graduate School, minimum grade requirement may vary depending on the type of graduate schools) in the foreign language courses replacing foreign language examination will be deemed as having passed the foreign language examination.
   ※ KU-KIST Graduate School of Convergence: Only degree candidates (registered degree candidates) and enrolled students (master’s degree students who have completed at least five semesters and integrated master-doctoral degree students who have completed at least nine semesters) are eligible to take foreign language courses, and those who acquire a grade of A or above will be deemed as having passed the foreign language examination.
   ※ Inquire at the Administration Office of the affiliated graduate school for eligibility to take foreign language courses as eligibility varies depending on the type of graduate school.
