Notice on Application for Extension of Thesis Submission Deadline for the Fall Semester of the 2025 Academic Year (Graduate School)


1. Eligibility Requirements
- Extension of the Deadline for Thesis Submission (Special Case)
: Those who have completed the master's or doctoral program at this graduate school but, due to unavoidable circumstances, have exceeded the deadline for thesis submission and are currently in a state of permanent completion or are expected to be.
 

1) For students admitted before the fall semester of the 2020 academic year:
 - Master's program: within 6 years from the date of admission
 - Doctoral program: within 10 years from the date of admission
 - Integrated Master’s and Doctoral program: within 12 years from the date of admission
 
 2) For students admitted from the spring semester of the 2021 academic year:
 - Master's program: within 4 years from the date of admission
 - Doctoral program: within 8 years from the date of admission
 - Integrated Master’s and Doctoral program: within 10 years from the date of admission
※ Applicants falling under the above categories must obtain approval through deliberation by the Graduate School Committee.


2. Required Documents
1) Application for extension of submission date (see 'Application for extension of submission of thesis' form attached)
2) Advisor's opinion letter (no separate form)
3) supporting documents (at least 10 pages of the thesis content)
 
 
3. Submission Period:
June 4 (Wed) – June 27 (Fri), 2025, by 16:00  *Late submissions will not be accepted
For reference: Spring semester submissions are accepted from early to mid-June, and Fall semester submissions from early to mid-December.


4. Submission Location:
Administrative Office of the Affiliated College (Department)


5. Deliberation:
Applications submitted at the end of the semester (June) will be reviewed during the vacation period (late July), and approved applicants may proceed to the next semester (September 2025).


 
 
6. Important Notes:
 
 1) Candidates granted an extension by the Graduate School Committee must pass the qualifying examination for the dissertation submission. However, if they had already passed the comprehensive examination at the time of the extension, they are considered to have met the qualification for dissertation submission. Nevertheless, retaking the comprehensive examination may be required depending on the department’s regulations.

2) Foreign language exams passed during the original enrollment period will still be recognized as valid.

3) The second foreign language exam requirement for doctoral programs applies the same as for currently enrolled students (for integrated Master’s and Doctoral programs, the requirement is equivalent to that of the doctoral program).
 
The 15 departments that require a secondary foreign language exam are:
 
Law, Korean Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Chinese and Japanese Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, Historical Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, Philosophy, Visual Culture (interdisciplinary), Comparative Literature & Comparative Culture(interdisciplinary), Cultural Heritage Studies (Interdisciplinary)
 

 
4) Applicants approved for extension by the Graduate School Committee must take the qualification exams and pay the prescribed tuition fee (12% of the tuition) every semester to submit the thesis. (However, in the first semester after re-entry, a re-enrollment fee will be additionally charged.)
 
5) The application for extension of the thesis submission deadline can be made and approved only once, and the master’s or doctoral thesis must be submitted and passed within two semesters, including the approved semester.

6) If the academic advisor assigned at the time of enrollment has retired, the student must change to a currently active faculty member as their advisor.
 

※ If you hold a D-2 (Student) visa and reach the maximum enrollment period without applying for an extension of the thesis submission period, you will not be eligible for a visa extension. In such cases, the GSC will report the termination of your visa to the Immigration Office. Therefore, if you plan to stay in Korea on a D-2 visa in the fall semester of 2025, please follow any forthcoming instructions regarding the thesis submission period extension application.
