Professor Yoo Seung Hun’s team from the Korea University School of Art and Design has won one of the world’s most prestigious design awards for the third year in a row.

Two researchers, Yeo-Jin Park and Jung-Min Shim, from the CO:UX Design Lab, supervised by Professor Yoo, has also won the Red Dot Junior Award, one of the world’s most renowned awards granted to promising young designers, at the Red Dot Communication Design Award 2016 in Germany.
* UX (User Experience): A comprehensive experience set of knowledge, memories, behavioral tendencies, and emotions that users encounter while using a certain product or service.

Their “Claybox” is the UX Design for an educational software program, by which children could produce 3-dimensional models by moving their fingers and bodies as if they were doing so with real clay, which will then be materialized into their toys through 3D printing. Park and Shim worked in collaboration with Dr. Hwa-Seop Lim’s team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) whose expertise lies in pattern recognition software. They succeeded in producing hand-movement recognition software solely based on Korean technologies, and in yielding an intuitive UX design based on analyses of movement patters of various groups of users. Their collaboration with KIST developed into a government-funded UX project, through which they could materialize the design.

Park (24) and Shim (27), currently enrolled in the Master’s program at KU’s School of Art and Design, said that “it is a great pleasure to win the Red Dot Award, which is one of the world’s most prestigious, for the school and our team as well as for ourselves. We have dedicated ourselves to analyzing the movement patterns of the users and to basing the UX design on a firm understanding of relevant technologies, not only to the stylistic aspects – we believe that the panel appreciated our dedication.”

Often likened to the Oscar Award, the Red Dot Design Award is regarded as one of the three most authoritative design awards, along with the iF Design Award and the IDEA Design Award. Professor Yoo’s team received the Red Dot Design Award in 2014, the IDEA Design Award in 2015, and then another Red Dot Design Award this year – establishing Korea University as a leading educational institute of design in Korea.
