Korea University’s Radio Research Center is selected as a 2021 project participant by the Ministry of Science and ICT
MSIT selected Korea University and Seoul National University.
The two RRCs will cultivate high-quality human resources at the Master's and Doctoral levels and develop new technologies in the fields of radio and satellite communications.

Korea University's Radio Research Center (RRC) has been selected by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) as one of two research program participants in 2021.
* MSIT designates university radio research centers for specific research projects and provides them with a maximum of 3.9 billion won over the course of up to eight years.

MSIT under the leadership of Minister Choi Ki-young has announced that it selected Korea University RRC (Center Director: Prof. Ko Young-chai) and Seoul National University RRC (Center Director: Prof. Oh Jung-seuk) as this year’s program participants. The aim is for them to cultivate high-quality professionals at the Master's and Doctoral levels in the fields of radio and satellite communications, and to lay a stable foundation for the development of original technologies.

As part of its RRC project, Korea University RRC aims to develop a communication system for mini-satellites in low-orbit satellite clusters. It will conduct joint research with Ajou University and Pohang University of Science and Technology on a wireless optical system for communication between these satellites, and a millimeter-wave system for communication between these satellites and the ground.

Center director Ko Young-chai said, “5G, which is seen as as the next-generation mobile communication technology, will be followed by 6G, and one of the core technologies of 6G will be low-orbit satellite-based communication. Korea’s satellite research is in relative terms lagging behind, and in this context the RRC project is a valuable opportunity for us to focus on research on low-orbit satellite communication for the next eight years.” He added, “Our center will now carry out the first satellite-focused research project in Korea. Although we have started late compared to other countries, we will cooperate with our partner universities and strive to secure and develop the world's best technology.”

From 2014 to 2020, MSIT has selected and supported 10 radio research centers, helping them to cultivate Master's and Doctoral students in the radio and satellite fields, and to secure source technologies for the future.

To this point, the selected RRCs have been conducting research in various fields such as next-generation antenna and circuit technology, electromagnetic wave analysis, satellite communication, next-generation radar communication, and radiowave medicine.
