In the World University Rankings by Subject 2022 announced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on April 6, Korea University solidified its reputation as a global university by once again ranking among the top 100 in the highest number of disciplines among domestic private universities for the fifth year running.

QS ranks the top 500 of 1,543 universities worldwide across 51 disciplines in five broad subject areas, namely arts & humanities, social sciences & management, engineering & technology, life sciences & medicine, and natural sciences.

Since 2020, Korea University has been among the top 100 in 27 disciplines, making it foremost among domestic private universities.

In life sciences & medicine, one of the five subject areas, the university climbed nine spots from last year, which reflects its current status as a leader in multidisciplinary research and new drug development. KU’s domestic ranking also surged in engineering & technology, arts & humanities, and life sciences & medicine. The improved performance this year is all the more significant as the indicator of 'international research network' was included.

The university’s global ranking improved in many of the 51 disciplines involved, including in pharmacy & pharmacology, psychology, sociology, computer science & information systems, environmental sciences, English language and literature, agriculture & forestry, electrical and electronic engineering, chemical engineering, and social policy & administration. In particular, it gained a higher number of citations in pharmacy & pharmacology, psychology, and computer science & information systems. In addition, the higher scores the university earned in relation to the indicator of 'employer reputation' in the discipline of sociology reflect the university’s vision of fostering future-oriented creative talent.

The Department of Psychology maintained its top spot among domestic universities in the discipline of anatomy & physiology. In 2021, Korea University became the first university in Korea to establish an independent School of Psychology, on this basis providing a specialized curriculum that promotes multidisciplinary thinking and creative problem-solving while maximizing the strengths of its psychology major. Named among the world’s top 100 in anatomy & physiology for three years running, the university continues to stay ahead of other domestic universities. The College of Medicine has made extensive investments in human resources and facilities in order to foster outstanding medical scientists, and is recognized as a world-class hub of fundamental medicine with its outstanding performance in research publications, in terms of both quality and quantity.

The university's three disciplines which were ranked among the world’s top 50 were social policy & administration, linguistics, and business & management studies. In addition, the university newly joined the top 100 in the fields of English language and literature, psychology, and environmental sciences.

In the QS World University Rankings released in June 2021, Korea University has taken the top spot not only among domestic private universities for seven years running, but also among private universities in Asia for three consecutive years. The rankings were compiled based on several metrics, including academic reputation, employer reputation, and faculty/student ratio. In the QS Asia University Rankings 2021, it has succeeded in maintaining its No. 1 spot for two years running based on its improvements in relation to the metrics of educational environment and infrastructure.
