Applying for an Extension of the Time Limit for Thesis/Dissertation Submission(2026-1)

1. Eligibility Requirements
- Students who have failed to submit their thesis/dissertation within the designated period of time for submitting their thesis/dissertation, after being given or being expected to receive permanent status as degree candidates
* Students admitted before 2020 Fall:
- Master’s program: 6 years after admission
- Doctoral program: 10 years after admission
- Integrated Master’s–Doctoral program: 12 years after admission
* Students admitted before 2020 Fall:
- Master’s program: 6 years after admission
- Doctoral program: 10 years after admission
- Integrated Master’s–Doctoral program: 12 years after admission
* Admitted Students from 2021 Spring:
- Master’s program: 4 years after admission
- Doctoral program: 8 years after admission
- Integrated Master’s–Doctoral program: 10 years after admission
- Doctoral program: 8 years after admission
- Integrated Master’s–Doctoral program: 10 years after admission
※ Applicants must receive approval through a deliberation by the Graduate School
2. The documents required to apply for the extension are as follows
1. Application for extension of submission date (see 'Application for extension of submission of thesis' form attached)
2. Advisor's opinion letter (no separate form)
3. supporting documents (at least 10 pages of the thesis content)
3.Submission Period
Spring semester applications: early to mid-June, Fall semester applications: early to mid-December
4. Submission Location
Administrative office of the applicant’s affiliated department/college
2. The documents required to apply for the extension are as follows

Administrative office of the applicant’s affiliated department/college
5. Deliberation
Applications submitted at the end of the semester (December) will be reviewed during the winter break (from early to late January), and approved applicants will be allowed to re-enter in the following semester (spring 2026).
6. Important Notes
3) The secondary foreign language examination for doctoral students shall be applied in the same manner as for enrolled students. (For Integrated Master’s–Doctoral programs, the requirements shall follow those of the doctoral program.)
The 16 departments that require a secondary foreign language exam are:
4) Students recognized by the Graduate School Committee as eligible for the extension must pay the prescribed tuition fee each semester (12% of the course fee for each degree program) in order to take qualification exams and submit their thesis
5) Application and permission for extension of the time limit for thesis/dissertation submission shall be limited to only once, and students who have been permitted to extend the time limit must submit their thesis/dissertation and have it pass the examination within two semesters including the semester in which the permission was granted.
4) If the academic advisor appointed during the student’s enrollment has retired, the student must request a change of academic advisor to a faculty member who is currently in service.

6. Important Notes
1) Students who have been permitted to extend the time limit must pass the qualification examinations required for thesis/dissertation submission.
If they have already passed the comprehensive examination while enrolled, they shall be deemed to have fulfilled the eligibility requirements for thesis/dissertation submission under Article 39 of these Detailed Enforcement Regulations. However, the relevant department administration committee may, upon deliberation, require these students to retake the comprehensive exam
2) Students who have been permitted to extend the time limit and have already passed a foreign language examination while enrolled shall be deemed to have fulfilled the eligibility requirements for thesis/dissertation submission under Article 38 of these Detailed Enforcement Regulations.If they have already passed the comprehensive examination while enrolled, they shall be deemed to have fulfilled the eligibility requirements for thesis/dissertation submission under Article 39 of these Detailed Enforcement Regulations. However, the relevant department administration committee may, upon deliberation, require these students to retake the comprehensive exam
