Notice on Additional Application for Exemption from the Foreign Language Requirement for Thesis Submission Qualification

- The Graduate School will conduct an additional application period for exemption from the foreign language requirement for thesis submission qualification for the Spring Semester of 2026, as outlined below. Students who plan to apply for thesis evaluation starting April 20 are required to submit their application within the designated period.
- This additional application period is a one-time, exceptional measure for the current semester only. No further additional application periods or remedial procedures will be provided for similar cases in the future.
1. Eligibility
: Graduate students (Master’s, Doctoral, and Integrated Master’s-Doctoral programs) who meet the exemption criteria by holding an official language test score within its two-year validity period but failed to apply during the regular application period.
2. Application Period
: April 17, 2026 (Fri), 09:00 – 17:00 (one day only)
※ Applications submitted after the above deadline will not be accepted under any circumstances, and no exceptions or remedial measures will be granted. Applicants are strongly advised to strictly adhere to the deadline.
3. Application Method
Applicants must complete the attached Form 1 (Statement of Reason), including the academic advisor’s confirmation and signature, and submit it in person along with the original official language test score report.

※Only in-person submissions will be accepted. Submissions via mail or online will not be accepted.
4. Confirmation Date of Additional Applications: Scheduled for April 21, 2026 (Tue)
◆ Important Notes
a. Submitted official language test scores will be provisionally approved in advance in accordance with the thesis evaluation application schedule, and their authenticity will be verified afterward.
If the results of the verification determine that the score is unverifiable or invalid, the previously approved exemption will be revoked in accordance with relevant regulations.
b. Only original official language test score reports issued within the two-year validity period and already in the applicant’s possession at the time of submission are acceptable.
Scores that are pending release or reports that have not yet been issued cannot be submitted. Furthermore, any score reports for which authenticity cannot be verified will not be recognized, so applicants are advised to take note of this requirement.

* International Students can not choose their own language as a first or secondary language exam. Please check the internal regulations of each department.
Second foreign language for doctoral degrees
The 16 departments that require a secondary foreign language exam are

※ The countries listed below are those where English is the native language. Students from these countries are not permitted to choose English as their first or second foreign language.
※ The above-mentioned departments shall have their students take a corresponding foreign language examination.
※ A second foreign language exam for Cultural Heritage Studies (interdisciplinary) shall be required from 2011 Spring Semester onwards.
